While COVID-19 vaccinations are being distributed throughout the world, the need for social distancing and mask wearing remains the same, especially as new strains of the coronavirus continue to evolve and spread. In fact, research shows that by March of 2021, a more contagious variant first found in Britain, could become the most dominant strain in the United States. However, public health officials continue to optimistically remind us of the importance of wearing masks in order to slow the spread of the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggested that while any mask is better than no mask, if an infected person and non-infected person both wear a tightly-fitted surgical mask, or layer a cloth mask and surgical mask together, the chance of spreading the coronavirus disease between those individuals can be reduced by up to 96.5 percent. Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, director of the CDC, stated in a White House coronavirus briefing that Americans should be wearing well-fitting masks that have two or more layers, explaining that when masks are worn and layered correctly, the transmission rate between an infected individual and uninfected individual declines tremendously.
New Research Calls for New Mandates
A year after the first confirmed coronavirus case in the United States, new mask mandates are still being passed across the country. While mask regulations vary by state, as of February 1, 2021, masks are now being mandated on federal property and domestic and international transportation across Washington D.C. and fourteen U.S. states. With these new mandates in place, it seems masks aren’t going anywhere any time soon, meaning it’s the perfect time to stock up on filtered face masks.
